"This is supposed to be a very active hurricane season, like the last one was. There is actually supposed to be one more named hurricane than last year," Philips said. "We just like to make sure our guys are prepared here."

Marty Spikes, readiness and emergency management chief at TAFB, says he is confident the base is prepared for the hurricane season.

the storm passed Bay and hit Franklin County.

Spikes spends six months out of the year focused on hurricanes and the other half finding areas to improve in order to be better prepared for hurricanes, while maintaining a focus on other emergency management situations.

Spikes joined TAFB in 2000 and began working in the position in 2001.

when I put it out to everybody," he added.

"We work side by side with evacuations with the county it's just letting the people know what the impact will be," Philips added, noting an evacuation needs to be given at least 24 hours ahead of landfall to allow time for preparing.

Spikes said the county will close all three bridges Bailey, Hathaway and DuPont if wind speeds reach 58 mph.

He said the base uses a public announcement loud speaker, social media, the navy's website, phone call with information relayed through a digital voice and a hotline number to inform employees about storm movement updates and to communicate other important information.

The most recent evacuation Spike recommended was in 2005, when weather officials predicted Hurricane Dennis would hit the area.

The area native and Rutherford High School graduate had not always planned to enter into the emergency management career field, but when the air force's readiness flight, which taught airmen how to survive in a chemical warfare environment, began to transition to emergency management "that's when I fell in love with this career field," he said.

"I have to do the formula yes, this is a 100 mph storm, but we're going to be impacted by these 58 mph winds long before the 100 mph winds get to us. So we need to start preparing the base, yesterday," Spikes said.

the 34 year old San Antonio, Texas native has worked in the position for a year and has 14 years experience as a meteorologist, he said.

"This is supposed to be a very active hurricane season, like the last one was. There is actually supposed to be one more named hurricane than last year," Philips said. "We just like to make sure our guys are prepared here."

"My job is to notify the commanding officer of the base of what the impact is going to be in our area and any of our assets," Philips said. "I update the installation on any changes of what was actually forecasted from before and what is actually going on at this time."

Local bases are hurricane ready

"This base as far as being ready for a hurricane is 100 percent ready," he said.

"Within the 24 to 72 hours, they're anchoring out any ships though their not dock sided and anything that needs to be put up is put up. So by the 24 hour mark, everything is set for hurricane on station everybody is already on their way out before the 24 hour mark hits," he added.

Keith Philips, meteorology and oceanography officer and emergency manager at the Naval Support Warfare Center Panama City Division, said the key thing for him is: "don't take things lightly."

"We began to do more than just deployment training," Prada Handbag Grey Spikes said. "We took on more duties that you see at the downtown emergency management office: preparing the base for tornadoes, hurricanes, aircraft crashes, mass casualties it just opened up a whole new responsibility."

"I'm not so much worried about how large the storm is or the wind speed as I am (about) when are those 58 miles per hour winds get here because I need to get everybody on the other side of that bridge," he said.
